New Member Dr. Miguel Angel Moreno-Mateos
Welcome to the newest FAU EAM member Dr. Miguel Angel Moreno-Mateos!
Miguel Angel Moreno-Mateos began his academic path at University Carlos III of Madrid, where he completed a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering in 2021. He subsequently pursued his doctoral studies at the same institution, combining experimental investigations—such as rheology and nanoindentation campaigns—with multiphysics constitutive modelling and advanced numerical frameworks to study soft magneto-active elastomers. During that time, he conducted an international research stay at the Institute of Applied Mechanics at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. After completing his doctorate in 2023, he moved to Germany to join Prof. Paul Steinmann’s ERC Advanced Grant project SoftFrac as a postdoctoral researcher at FAU. In 2025, he was nominated as a member of the German society for applied mathematics and mechanics GAMM Juniors, where he has served as secretary.
He has always been curious to unravel the mechanics and physics of materials, namely soft ones that respond to external stimuli with a non-linear response such as magnetic, electric, and flexoelectric materials. His research focuses on failure mechanisms in soft matter and on coupled multiphysics problems. His work has centred on developing methods to characterize and enhance fracture in multifunctional soft solids and to quantify nonlinear fracture mechanics through configurational forces. Currently he investigates the mechanics of cutting in soft materials, including hydrogels, elastomers, and food materials. To tackle these challenges, he integrates experimental and computational solid mechanics techniques, leveraging both to gain fundamental insights into complex material behaviour.
